THIS PHOTOSET OMG

WAS RUINING A PERFECTLY GOOD COPY OF ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND WITH WATER DAMAGE REALLY WORTH GETTING 8,000 NOTES?!?!?

TREAT THAT BOOK WITH RESPECT, GODDAMNIT. IT DOESN’T NEED TO GO FOR A NICE SWIM, IT NEEDS TO BE FUCKING READ.

GO TO THE TIME OUT CORNER AND THINK ABOUT YOUR CHOICES

It’s a book. A book still in publication in many other formats.

Those formats can be read and enjoyed.

The book isn’t the story. This isn’t “disrespecting” the book.

This particular book was used for another, very valid, form of art.

And it looks amazing.

Coming from someone who LOVES reading, I think we need to stop putting books on a pedestal like this.

Ok.

Not to mention that the book was used to create a work of art that directly pays homage to the story the book originally held in the first place? Books aren’t the pages and the binding and the ink; if they were just that, they wouldn’t matter, and we would never have people who flip the heck out when they see someone doing something they perceive as disrespecting or destroying them.

Books matter because the stories held within them aren’t confined to just pages and ink (or data, as they now can be). Stories transcend the physical; they extend beyond the page, and beyond the pen, and beyond the author and the publisher, and beyond each individual reader, and by doing so, they help each person who they reach transcend themselves, and the physical things they are tied to as well.

That’s what makes books important in the first place.

Using one instance of its physical existence to create good art doesn’t disrespect a book - it honours it, by letting the story be more than just a collection of words on bits of paper, the way stories are meant to be.

10 Sites To Download Free Audio Books

If you’re looking for a place to download some free audio books, you’re in luck. Whether you want to get inspired, scared by a mystery, or simply have something to listen to on a long drive, there are loads of places to find free audio books. They may not be on the New York Times Bestseller list but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth your time.

For example, Sun Tzu’s ‘Art of War’ is not quite selling like the ‘Shades of Gray’ but it’s an important read. In any case, these sites all host free audio books that are worth checking out!

NOTE: These are all legal sites that host public domain books. There’s more than enough great stuff in these libraries so check them each out when you have the time!

Free Classic Audio Books

This site hosts a myriad of books that are all in mp3 or m4b format. You can find what you’re looking for by sorting by the author’s last name. The advantage of using the iPod format (m4b) is that it remembers where you stop in a file.

Project Gutenberg

Another source for the classics. Read timeless tales from Dickens, Poe, and more with Project Gutenberg’s massive inventory. Boasting more than 2,000 free audiobooks in basically all categories, this should be one of your bookmarked sites!

Books Should Be Free

Like the aforementioned ‘Art of War,’ many all-time bestsellers are available on Books Should Be Free. They’re from the public domain and you can find what you’re looking for through some handy sorting tools. Want a children’s book? How about just seeing the adult book results? Yep, you can do that.

Librophile

When you first go to this site, you’re shown the price of every book. That price is $0.00, possibly the best price ever. Librophile has a substantial library of audio books as well as e-books that you can search by keyword, language, price (free), and more.

Lit2Go

Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. An abstract, citation, playing time, and word count are given for each of the passages. Many of the passages also have a related reading strategy identified. Each reading passage can also be downloaded as a PDF and printed for use as a read-along or as supplemental reading material for your classroom.

LibriVox

LibriVox provides free audiobooks from the public domain. There are several options for listening. LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books.

LearnOutLoud Free Audio

LearnOutLoud.com has scoured the Internet to bring you over 5000 free audio and video titles. This directory features free audio books, lectures, speeches, sermons, interviews, and many other great free audio and video resources. Most audio titles can be downloaded in digital formats such as MP3 and most video titles are available to stream online. Enjoy!

Podiobooks

The term podiobook was coined by Evo Terra in April 2005 to describe serialized audiobooks which are distributed via RSS, much like a podcast. Podiobooks is supported by donations (if you use it, you should think about giving!) and boasts a solid set of sorting tools. You can browse popular books, award-winning books, all titles, etc. Lots of great novels in here!

Storynory

Beautifully read audio stories for children and adults. Listen online or via podcast or app. Fairytales, myths, legends and stories from around the world.

AudioCloset

The audiobooks are absolutely free. They have a solid set of books that are worth reading such as Kipling and Dickens. All audiobooks have been recorded especially for the AudioCloset website.

Audiobooks kept me going while working the night shift. I definitely recommend it.

Additionally, not everyone has the easiest time with reading (this post originally comes from Dyslexic Kids), so signal boosts would be awesome.

Post by Ash.

Please – try not to look away

That was the phrase which stuck out to me most when I read The Book Theif. It’s partly to do with the subject matter – as a rule, I don’t like sad things. I don’t really enjoy art that confronts me with the worst parts of life. Melodrama is fine, which is why I can listen to a recording of Les Mis and laugh and sing along and enjoy. But in a dark theatre, giving myself over to Anne Hathaway’s choking voice and larger-than-life tears, trying to comprehend that kind of pain in another human being – well, it’s hard and it’s not pretty, and I come out of the movie a little shaky.

The Book Thief is like that. It’s not dealing with a pretty topic or a pretty time period. In fact it deals with the combination of some of the worst things – poverty, war, hatred – and the horrors these things inflict on people.

Max was in many ways the most difficult character to read about. He’s profoundly powerless throughout the novel, and his isolation and loneliness are palpable and painful. He’s an example of the impact human beings can have on one another, both for good and ill. He’s hurting in the book, and as we read we see him helped, and we’re filled with the same uneasy gratitude he himself has.

“Thank you. For Max Vandenburg, those were the two most pitiful words he could possibly say, rivaled only by I’m sorry. There was a constant urge to speak both expressions, spurred on by the affliction of guilt. […] Living was living. The price was guilt and shame.” (208)

He’s surviving, but only just, and it’s not just the threat of Nazi’s and bombs. His relationship with Liesel is so important to him because it is through her that he feels rehumanized. (His interactions with her parents are important as well, but he unarguably has the greatest bond with Liesel.)

It’s hard to look at someone so pitiful and still see the person, but that’s what we’re asked to do. We’re confronted with Max’s pain and the circumstances that caused it and we’re asked – even if it’s hard –

Please – try not to look away.

Ugh this. (Wow, Will. Insightful commentary there!)

I’m actually still not done with the book, partly because it is so long and I am so so tired, but largely because it is so painful to read. It’s painful from the get-go, even before you get attached to the characters. And as soon as you start to like Liesel, you feel pain, because the life of a person with whom Death is so fascinated is sure to be filled with pain and loss.

It’s one of the great things about reading, the ability to connect so well to another person that you can feel their pain even before they feel it, because as a reader, you can see the inevitable end. I feel the best books have an inevitable end rather than a surprising one, because with an inevitable end you fell it coming, and so the feeling is prolonged. It mirrors the way that sometimes in life we can foresee what will happen but are powerless to stop it.

rhaithe:

typingfrantically:

Let me talk to you about books.

Specifically, one book. This book.

This book should be a best seller. This book should be required reading for graduating from high school. Before you get that diploma, you read this book.

This book deals with debunking “Neurosexism,” which is a very fancy term for all of that evolutionary psychology bullshit that people spill about those “brain differences” between boys and girls.

This book debunks such myths as:

Boys are better at math than girls

Women make crappy lawyers/business CEOs/etc, as their brains are not cut out for aggression.

Men make crappy counselors/primary school teachers/primary parents/etc, as their brains are not cut out for empathy.

MEN ARE BUILT FOR GOING OUT AND HUNTING WHILE WOMEN ARE BUILT FOR STAYING HOME AND BABYMAKING IT’S NOT SEXISM IT’S JUST BIOLOGY

And many other such myths.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:

Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience)

Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave

How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims

Experiences of trans* people, both through interviews and empirical studies.

AND FINALLY - It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled - and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.

Delusions of Gender has reinforced what Oberlin taught me: The gender binary is stupid and arbitrary, and dangerous. And it is a self-perpetuating bias that needs to be addressed to be overcome.

So adding this to my to-read list.

To steal something back."

bookclublr:

Post by Will

TW: Transphobic, Homophobic, and Misogynistic slurs

I’ll admit, I’m not very far into The Book Thief. I’m actually kind of kicking myself for picking such a long book for a club I had intended to be low time commitment. But I just happened to read the back for the first time. I seldom read the back of a book right away, it’s a habit I picked up in sixth grade reading class. I also usually take the dust jacket off a hardcover when I read. But this time I put the jacket back on, backwards. As I was fixing it, I happened to read the back.

“How does it feel, anyway?”

“How does what feel?”

“When you take one of those books?”

At that moment, she chose to keep still. If he wanted an answer, he’d have to come back, and he did. “Well?” he asked, but again, it was the boy who replied, before Liesel could even open her mouth. “It feels good, doesn’t it? To steal something back.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about reclaiming slurs lately. “Bitch” “Queer” Both these are words I used to have a strong gut reaction against. “Queer” in particular. My father used it to talk about “those people” and how wrong and lesser they were. I always thought unfair, even when I myself was pretty trans*- and homophobic. It seemed demeaning to separate someone out for being different. It seemed like it must feel very much like what the bullies at school did to me. I didn’t know why I was Other, I just knew that I was. And I was ashamed. When I started figuring out why I was Other, that “Queer” applied to me, the “he-she” like some of the kids in my class called me applied to me, I was not ashamed. I finally knew why I was Other, that it wasn’t something I’d done, and that I didn’t deserve the torture. But I still didn’t like the word “queer”. I do now. Partly because things have gotten more complicated (I’m polyamorous panromantic asexual and gender-fluid) and just saying I’m queer is easier. But it’s more than that.

I don’t know what Liesel thinks, but the boy is right. It feels good to steal something back. Slurs are more than words. They’re instruments to steal someone’s dignity. When you reclaim a slur that’s been used against you, you’re stealing your dignity back. When I say I’m queer, I’m not just saying that my gender changes and I like girls. I’m saying that this is who I am, and if you have a problem with it, it’s your problem, not mine. It feels good to steal something back.

salutationtothestars:

Since 2012 is drawing to a close, I thought this would be a good time to expressly point out some of the absolute best blogs, people I’m in a comfortable mutual follow with (even if sometimes I don’t know why), and people I dearly adore.

To everyone who follows me, thank you. You’ve put up with some ridiculous stuff, and have offered your support and love in the times when I’ve so desperately needed it. You are all magnificent, and I hope things go well for you in the new year, and that we can all be better friends.

Post by: Will

Anyone interested in joining our bookclub should click here to join the group blog.

We’ll be using this blog to make our initial posts, so that we can all see the notes.

Responses should be made by reblogging to your own blog.

Put your name and a link to your blog at the top of each post so we know who wrote it.

Posts should be tagged with the book title and author title so people can find our club if they’re tracking the tag.

Try to make at least one post in the first two weeks of the month so we can discuss.

You can make as many posts as you want.

Our first book is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Please reblog this post so people can see it.

Preliminary Member List

bookclublr:

Here are the people who are in the club so far:

Will (me) | astheplanetswiftlytilts (primary: maggietenobar)

Sarah | ijustwanttobeperceivedthewayiam

Damini | loveisnotamaybethingxo

Ash | faithliketeeth

And one vague maybe:

Lauren | queenofeden

If any of you will be making responses from a different URL (for instance, I’ll be making responses from my book blog, not my main one), let me know and I’ll list that URL on the official list page.

If anyone else sees this post and wonders what’s going on, click here. We still need one more member to meet the minimum of five I originally set, though personally I think we could make a go of it with four if we have to if that’s alright with the rest of you.

I’ll be posting a ~rules list soon. That sounds scary, but it’s basically how tagging and such will work.

I’ve sent a join link to the three definites, so make sure you click that.

Let's start a Tumblr book club!

Hello Tumblr! Do like to read? Do you like to talk about things in silly amounts of detail without worrying about a grade? Then you should join this currently unnamed book club!

We’ll be reading one book a month, focusing mainly on YA and shorter adult novels, so as not to make it too overwhelming. I’ll be picking the first few books so people have enough notice, but after that we’ll be open to suggestions. One rule: ABSOLUTELY NO HERMAN MELVILLE. He’s a fine writer, but we’ve all got blogs to run, so let’s not go overboard. If we get a lot of suggestions, I’ll set up a survey and we’ll vote.

We’ll be sharing a group tumblr and making all our initial posts there. That way we can all see the reblog notifications and keep up with the discussion.

At the start of the month, make at least one post about the book. It can be anything: in-depth analysis of tone or just your thoughts on the book. If you want to make multiple posts, great! But please space them a few days apart, especially in the beginning. The goal is to generate discussion, and we don’t want all the posts getting lumped together and lost. Queue/schedule a post if you need to. JUST MAKE SURE YOU POST TO THE GROUP BLOG FIRST. Put your URL at the beginning or end so we know who wrote it. Then you can reblog it to your own blog if you want. Discussion reblogs should be done on your own blog, not the group blog.

If you can’t do a month, don’t worry about it. Just remember that the group only works if people participate, so don’t do it every month. ;) If you can’t finish a book in time for the first of the month, that’s cool too. Just post when you can. But if you can read the book, POST!

I think we should have at least five people to make this work. If I don’t get enough interest, I’ll leave it up to those who are in to decide if we continue or not. If you’re not sure, you can always try it and cut out later if you need to, or you can wait a bit and join later. This club is designed to be flexible!

In January we’ll be discussing The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

In February we’ll be discussing A Separate Peace by John Knowles

March is up for suggestions/vote

I hope you’ll consider joining!

If you’re interested, send an ask to astheplanetswiftlytilts

Signal boosting would be appreciated!

(Also name suggestions. We NEED a name!)

duchessoftardis221b:
